Subsea Structure

Degradation of non-metallic materials

The Curtin Corrosion Centre together with the Curtin University Oil and Gas Innovation Centre (CUOGIC), is seeking a Research Associate with a background in non-metallic materials degradation to play an integral role in a project developed to assess the potential impact of decommissioning Oil and Gas structures in the marine environment. In particular, the project aims to understand the lifespan and fate of non-metallic components (e.g., plastics and polymeric coatings) of O&G structures if left in the ocean.

National Decommissioning Research Initiative

This research programme is one of a number of projects executed for, and on behalf of, the National Decommissioning Research Initiative (NDRI) within National Energy Resources Australia (NERA). NERA is one of 6 growth centres funded by the Australian Government Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be joining a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in coatings, metallic degradation, biodegradation and oil and gas operations. The successful candidate would contribute their expertise to the review and interpretation of existing public domain and confidential industry data on non-metallic materials degradation in the ocean towards developing a robust experimental research program for the understanding of mechanisms and rates of polymers degradation in the marine environment. The project outcomes include a desktop study and state-of-the-art report, establishment of an international network of collaborators, proof-of-concept experimental research and a proposed long-term experimental program aim at generating scientific evidence on the fate of non-metallic materials in decommissioned equipment.

Important Dates

  • The application closes 10:00 PM, Tuesday 4th of August 2020.
